What is retail insurance?

Retail insurance helps protect your retail business from unexpected events causing property damage or where you, an employee, or your business can be held liable due to negligence.

What is covered by retail business insurance?

Bullfrog offers two areas of insurance for retailers:

  1. Commercial general liability insurance
  2. Property insurance

Commercial general liability insurance can protect retailers if the company or an employee is held liable for causing injury or property damage to a third party due to negligent acts. What are negligent acts? They are a failure to exercise appropriate care in a specific situation.

Here are a few examples:

  • An employee makes an offhand comment about the competition in a news interview and your company is sued for harming the reputation of your competitor.
  • A customer slips and falls outside the front door of your retail shop, injuring themselves. They sue you for damages due to their injuries.
  • A vendor’s equipment is accidentally damaged by an employee and the vendor sues you for damages.

Your legal expenses including defence costs, judgement awards, and settlements are covered if you’re sued for causing property damage or bodily injury due to negligent acts. This applies regardless of the outcome of the lawsuit.

We offer a few levels of liability protection:

  • $2 million
  • $3 million
  • $4 million
  • $5 million

The amount of coverage you need depends on the likelihood of a lawsuit, the estimated cost of a lawsuit, the number of employees you have, your retail store’s annual revenue, where you operate, and what you sell.

Property insurance covers damage to property owned by your business so long as the damage was caused by an insured peril. This can include fire, theft and vandalism.

We offer two levels of property insurance for retailers:

  • $10,000
  • $20,000

Consider how much it would cost to replace your company’s property, including furniture, inventory, and equipment. This should also include unit improvements and betterments.

Your policy documents will outline what’s covered and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

What isn’t covered by retail store insurance?

Retail store insurance is designed to reduce the financial burden from specific, unexpected disasters. Unfortunately, it doesn’t cover everything.

For example, your retail shop property coverage doesn’t cover earthquake, flood, sewer backup or wear and tear. Your commercial general liability protection doesn’t cover injury to your employees, or intentional acts of damage or injury to a third party.

Your policy documents will explicitly state the exclusions (what isn’t covered) on your policy.

Do retailers need insurance?

Retailers may be required to hold commercial general liability coverage by a landlord. There may be other contracts that stipulate a certain type and amount of insurance protection.

Otherwise, you may not have to carry insurance – but could your retail store afford to cover a lawsuit out of pocket? Could it afford to replace your property if it is stolen or lost in a fire? If the answer is no to either question, insurance is a good investment for your business. Lawsuits and disasters can financially cripple a business to the point they cannot recover.

What happens if my retail shop doesn’t have insurance?

If your retail shop doesn’t have insurance, you would have to pay out of pocket for any lawsuits or property damage. This can be very expensive.

If you are required by contract to have a certain type and amount of insurance and do not, you would be violating that contract. This may have legal repercussions for your business.

How much does retail insurance cost?

Retail insurance starts at $500 to $1000/year or $42 to $84/month depending on the insurance company. We offer retail business insurance quotes from a few different insurance companies to ensure you’re getting the most competitive rates.

Your rates may be higher depending on your individual risk. For example, if you sell ride-on cars for kids, your insurance rates are going to be much higher than if you’re a grocer, even if you have the same annual revenue and amount of insurance coverage.

What affects retail business insurance rates?

Retail business insurance rates are affected by the following factors:

  • Where your retail store is located and other businesses in your area
  • Your annual revenue
  • The number of employees you have
  • Your business operations (such as what you sell)
  • Your insurance history
  • Your insurance options

Due to a client’s request, and for the first time, I needed Commercial General Liability insurance, but I had no clue where to start. I Googled “CGL” and up came Bullfrog Insurance. Even though my needs were relatively small, due to the client needs, they had to be very specific. Every question I asked was answered by the Bullfrog insurance representative, Raman, who was very helpful. And then when I realized I needed more coverage, she didn’t flinch and let me know she’d get back to me right away. I got great coverage and all of it was done via email. Now I’ll know who to turn to for other small business insurance needs.
