When Should You Invest Into Your Career?

Alright here it is, the basic rules of financial wellness are as follows: earn more, spend less, and invest the rest! Seems simple right? When it comes to earning more, your potential is unlimited. Investing into your career and bolstering the value that you bring to the marketplace will help you grow your money the most. But when exactly is the best time to invest into your career?

The answer is also simple: right now!

No matter what type of job you may have, there is always room to expand your skills and knowledge. Which in turn will boost your value in the workplace! There are so many ways to learn, take a look at these easy ways to gain more skills:

Education

Online Courses

Whether it’s marketing, social media, or even SEO, there are plenty of inexpensive online courses available (some are even free!) Platforms like HubSpot, Udemy or Lynda are all great to check out. You just need to do your research and enroll!

Certification

If you’re in a position where you have a knowledge gap, you need to learn X to get Y, a certification can definitely help you land the jobs you want! Certifications can be the most valuable in fields such as IT, software development or cyber security. You can earn these certifications either in-person or online so there are options that’ll work best for you and your schedule!

School

This is probably the greatest investment for both your time and your money. To a lot of people, it may be a last resort if you can’t find an online course or certification program. But before you head back to school, make sure you consider if it’s worth the price and if it’s right for you.

Network

Typically, when you think of networking, you think of it as going to professional conferences and gatherings, but you can also expand your network from the comfort of your own home. Start by allocating at least 10-20mins a day to reading and making meaningful comments to posts written by others in your field or industry of work. Share an article, refer a friend for a gig, tweet or post from your network. Simple!

Volunteer

This is a resourceful way to both expand your own network but also gain more knowledge and skills for a cause you care about. While you may have some entry-level tasks to start, you can also let the organization know you want to bolster your skills in a specific area. Think of it as free education and on the bright side, you’re expanding your network and giving back!

Grow Where You Are

Whatever job you have, you should always take advantage of free opportunities to keep on growing. For example, by tackling a project that no one else seems to want to do, perhaps you’ll gain relevant skills. Or offer to step in and help an overworked colleague. It won’t only help you learn something new, but you might actually gain an important ally in that colleague.

Don’t be shy about asking your employer for a proper one-on-one meeting to talk about the areas in which you’d like to expand your knowledge and skills!

There are so many ways to make yourself more marketable and earn a higher income, we all got to start somewhere! By following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to creating a custom roadmap to help you hit your professional milestones!
